Rigid Gas Permeable and Scleral Contact Lenses

Rigid contact lenses are custom fit lenses that can offer clear and comfortable vision for patients with disorders affecting the front surface of the eye. These lenses offer excellent optics to maximize vision. Scleral contact lenses, which are large diameter rigid gas permeable lenses, can offer enhanced comfort over traditional corneal lenses while providing high quality vision. You may benefit from these contact lenses if you have any of the following conditions:

· Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease in which the cornea thins over time. This thinning leads the cornea to bulge out, forming a cone and creating irregular astigmatism that most often cannot be fully corrected with eyeglasses or soft contact lenses. Keratoconus affects approximately 1 in 1000 individuals and most often begins in the teenage years to early twenties. Although there is no cure for keratoconus, progression can be halted with corneal crosslinking, a surgical procedure which stabilizes the corneal tissue. As such, early detection is extremely important to arrest the disease process in its tracks.

· Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the front curves of the eye are not perfectly spherical in shape. This prevents light from being focused directly on the retina at the back of the eye and leads to blurred vision.

· Post Radial Keratotomy (RK)

This refractive corrective surgery involved creating incision in the cornea to flatten the structure and correct for nearsightedness. This procedure was mainly performed before the advent of LASIK and other laser vision correction surgeries. A common side effects of this procedure include fluctuating vision and irregular astigmatism.

· Severe Dry Eyes
